The general function of dreams is to try to restore our psychic balance through the production of dream material which restores—in a very delicate way—holistic psychic balance. I would call this the additional (or compensatory) role of dreams in our mental life.

Interpretation of your dreams
Basic recommendations that will allow you to get closer to understanding your dreams and thus better interpret their meaning:
Prepare: Keep a pen and paper by the bed.
Review: As soon as you wake up, review the elements of your dream.
Keywords: Identify keywords from your dream that you can name your dream from. Write down the title and keywords followed by as many dreams as you can remember.
Journal: Keep a diary of your dreams and notes, thoughts and feelings about your dreams.
Associations: Write down your associations with images or symbols in your dreams.
Amplifications: Find amplifications of images or symbols in your dreams.
Context/Settings: Pay attention to the context of your outer life events during the dream, as well as the setting of your dream.
Structure: Look at the structure of your dream.
What is the initial situation?
What is evolving or changing?
What is an action?
What is a climax?
What is lysis?
Characters: Pay attention to the characters in the dream and determine if there is a recognizable protagonist.
Feeling: Note any special emotions or feelings associated with your dream.
